El Niño to Suppress 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, NOAA Reports
US · Published May 22, 2026
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued its forecast for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, predicting below-average activity.
The season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, is expected to see 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, and 1 to 3 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).
This reduced activity is attributed to the strengthening of El Niño, a climatic event that typically suppresses hurricane formation in the Atlantic.

Why It's Important?

While the forecast suggests fewer storms, the potential for significant impacts remains. Coastal areas in the Atlantic basin, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, are still at risk of severe weather events. Major hurricanes, even in a below-average season, can cause widespread destruction, disrupt lives, and lead to loss of life. Residents in vulnerable regions should not become complacent and should remain prepared for any potential storms.
